About the Boris Eifman Ballet

Eifman founded his ballet company in 1977, combining classical and contemporary ballet in his own unique style. After many years of struggling with various restrictions that limited his work, Eifman managed to establish the company, which now has about 60 dancers, and established his own creative center, operating in the city of St. Petersburg. Since 1990, the company has toured Asia, Germany, England, South Africa, Poland, Spain, Austria, France and the United States. In 2000, the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow added Eifman’s work “Russian Hamlet” to the company’s regular repertoire.

 

Eifman created over 40 ballets. He and the soloists of  his creation the ballet  Tchaikovsky, won the Golden Mask, Russia’s most prestigious dance award. Eifman also won the Golden Mask Award for his lifetime achievement. He also won the St. Petersburg Prize four times and a special award in Russia for his contribution to the promotion of the performing arts, the Chevalier of the Arts award from the French government, the Russian government award, the Artist of Russia award, and even received the title of professor at the Vaganova Ballet Academy. The same academy where he began his studies, and graduated from the choreography department of the Leningrad Conservatory. In 2004, he created a one-act ballet commissioned by the New York City Ballet as part of the centennial celebrations for choreographer George Balanchine. In 2013, the Boris Eifman Dance Academy began operating in St. Petersburg.
