Leo Muscato is a director and playwright, born in Martina Franca. He studied Literature and Philosophy at Sapienza University in Rome and Directing at the Paolo Grassi School of Dramatic Arts in Milan.

He has directed over eighty productions, working with institutions including Teatro alla Scala, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, San Francisco Opera, Theater Bonn, the Greek National Opera, and Opéra de Monte-Carlo, as well as festivals including the Festival della Valle d’Itria, the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, and the Macerata Opera Festival.

In 2026 he directs Otello (Verdi) at Theater Bonn. In 2025, his productions include Rigoletto (Verdi) at Teatro Regio Torino and Attila (Verdi) at Teatro La Fenice. In 2024 he directed La forza del destino (Verdi) at Teatro alla Scala, a revival of Un ballo in maschera (Verdi) at San Francisco Opera, Cesare in Egitto (Giacomelli) at the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, a revival of La bohème (Puccini) at the Macerata Opera Festival, L’amour des trois oranges (Prokofiev) at Theater Bonn, and Manon Lescaut (Puccini) at the Bologna Municipal Theater.

In prose theatre, he has worked with the National Theatres of Turin, Genoa, Veneto, Palermo, and Naples, with the INDA of Syracuse, and with numerous Permanent Theatres and cultural institutions.

He has received the ANCT Award for Best Prose Director, the Abbiati Award for Best Opera Director, the International Opera Awards – Opera Star, and the International Ivo Chiesa Award.

He has directed the documentaries Geometrie anarchiche and L’Utopia della Valle, and made his film debut with La Rivincita.

He also conducts pedagogical activity for actors, directors, playwrights, and opera singers, based on text analysis and the exploration of four interpretative registers – Tragic, Dramatic, Comedy, and Comic.
