Crime and Punishment

The Eifman Ballet, the beloved dance company from St. Petersburg, returns to Israel for the 17th time with a new work, "Sin and Punishment," based on the famous book by Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky. While remaining true to artistic values, Eifman does not create a movement translation of the story, but uses all of his unique tools of expression, which he has developed over decades of creation, to offer his answers to the most important questions that deal with the inner nature of humanity.

Eifman Ballet, the beloved dance company from St. Petersburg, returns to Israel for the 17th time with a new work, “Crime and Punishment,” based on the famous book by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky.
The premiere of the work took place in St. Petersburg in September 2024.

Exactly one year after their previous successful visit, the Eifman Ballet dancers return to the stage of the Tel Aviv Opera House.
As usual, Eifman dives into Russian culture and literature, which are a great source of inspiration for him, and this time he returns to his favorite author Dostoevsky. This is the third work he has created based on his books, after “The Idiot” and “The Brothers Karamazov.” This time he chose the most prominent and challenging work in Dostoevsky’s literary writing, “Crime and Punishment.”

Eifman on the work:
“I turn to literary masterpieces not to look for plots but to enrich the production with philosophical and intellectual ideas. These are revealed after we go deep into the work and find them beneath the surface.”

While remaining true to artistic values, Eifman does not create a movement translation of the story, but rather uses all of his unique tools of expression, which he has developed over decades of creative work, to offer his answers to the most important questions dealing with the inner nature of humanity, its answers regarding the universal moral compass, and the consequences of their deterioration.

Eifman adds:
“Dostoevsky’s works are an inexhaustible source of wisdom, capable of purifying the darkest corners of existence and illuminating them with the deepest truth. Crime and Punishment symbolizes the beginning of Dostoevsky’s journey in creating great novels. This is a work that I have been drawn to for many, many years. The ballet is a reconstruction of the arduous spiritual journey that the book’s hero, Raskolnikov, goes through. ‘Thou shalt not murder’ is one of the ten most important commandments, and whoever violates it denies the supreme value of life. The untouchable gift given to us by God.”
