The East in the West – “He mesmerizes the listener in everything he does,” writes the BBC’s The Voice about the young clarinetist Jonathan Leibowitz, the soloist in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. The Salzburg-Viennese work will be flanked by two works in which Western art sends out longing arms to the Middle East: Mozart’s exotic-orientalist “The Abduction from the Harem,” and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.” In both works from the heart of the harem, melodic twists and ornaments give the music an “Oriental” tone, as it was understood at the time.
