Renaud Doucet (stage director and choreographer) and André Barbe (set and costume designer) specialize in dramaturgy, stage direction, sets and costume design. Recent engagements include La Fille du Régiment (Donizetti) at Teatro La Fenice and Teatro Regio di Torino; La Bohème (Puccini) at Opéra National du Capitole de Toulouse and Scottish Opera; La Cenerentola (Rossini) and Die Fledermaus (J. Strauss) at Hamburg Staatsoper; Don Pasquale (Donizetti) at Canadian Opera Company; Pelléas et Mélisande (Debussy) at Teatro Regio di Parma and Opéra Royal de Liège; Il Signor Bruschino (Rossini) at Pesaro Rossini Opera Festival and Teatro comunale di Bologna; Turandot (Puccini) and The Sound of Music (Rodgers) at Volksoper Wien; and La Cenerentola (Rossini) at Latvian National Opera and Opéra National du Capitole de Toulouse.
After separate beginnings in music, theatre, dance, television and opera, Barbe & Doucet joined forces in 2000. Since then, they have created together over 50 new opera productions recognized for their creativity, sense of spectacle and minutely detailed dramaturgy. André Barbe received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University and studied at the National Theatre School of Canada under designer François Barbeau. He has designed over 300 productions for theatre, television and opera, receiving the 2005 Irish Times Irish Theatre Award for best designer for Pénélope (Fauré) at Wexford Festival Opera and the 2011 Rolf-Mares Prize for best sets and costumes for La Cenerentola (Rossini) at Hamburgische Staatsoper. A trained musician, Renaud Doucet began his performing career as a solo dancer, ballet master and choreographer in international dance companies. He also worked as an actor in French films and TV series and was introduced to opera as baroque choreographer and gesture specialist, coaching singers such as Alfredo Kraus, Jaime Aragall, Raina Kabaivanska and Mirella Freni. Their work as a team gained international recognition with their production of Cendrillon (Massenet) at Opéra national du Rhin, Opéra de Marseille, New York City Opera, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and Opéra de Montréal. In 2019 their production of Il Bravo (Mercadante) received the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Opera Production. Their productions of La Fille du Régiment (Donizetti), Die Zauberflöte (Mozart), Il Bravo, La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein (Offenbach), La Belle Hélène (Offenbach), Il Signor Bruschino and Pelléas et Mélisande are presented on various platforms, TV channels and cinemas in numerous countries.
