Over two decades ago, the Israeli Opera began a wonderful project to stage opera productions among various communities across the country. Each such production contributed to exposing an entire community to the magic of the world of opera through artistic activity within the community itself.
Over the years, the project has reached many communities across the country, from Eilat to Kiryat Shmona, and has staged various productions together with the local community.
As part of the project, an artistic team from the Israeli Opera – directors, musical directors, soloists, musicians, designers, and more – works with local artistic forces – choirs, singers, musicians, actors, and dancers, and together they stage a full operatic production in the Hebrew language.
Throughout the entire project period, the Israeli Opera conducts educational activities in local schools and within the community, allowing students and those who are not directly participating in the production to learn about the opera and enjoy its charm.
The premiere day, when the production is performed at the local cultural center, becomes a real holiday for the community, as the entire community gathers to watch the opera, most of them for the first time. It is truly a magical moment, from which we benefit no less than the community.
Over the years, the opera has visited dozens of communities: the Hatikva neighborhood in Tel Aviv, Ashkelon, the Gilo neighborhood in Jerusalem, Ramla, Netanya, Dimona, Ofakim, Tiberias, Afula, Acre, Tirat Carmel, Sderot, Migdal HaEmek, Nazareth, Netivot, Beit Shean, Ashkelon, Kiryat Gat, and more. During its activities in the community, the opera has staged the productions “The Magic Flute,” “Cinderella,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Carmen,” “The Barber of Hatikva”, and “The Elixir of Love.”
Half of the budget for the Community Opera project comes from the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and 25% from the local authority. The rest of the amount is raised by the Israeli Opera so that we can expand this important activity to even more cities and communities in the country.
