The East in the West – “He hypnotizes the listener in everything he does,” writes the BBC’s Town about the young clarinet artist Jonathan Leibowitz, the soloist in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. This Salzburg-Viennese work will be flanked by two pieces in which Western art extends longing arms toward the Middle East: Mozart’s exotic-orientalist “The Abduction from the Seraglio,” and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.” In both works, melodic twists and ornamentations from the heart of the harem give the music an “Eastern” flavor, as it was understood at the time.
