Zanella Renato, choreographer
Was born in Italy. He began his dancing career in his home town of Verona and then joined the Basel Ballet with Heinz Spoerli and the Stuttgart Ballet where he also began working as a choreographer. In 1995 he was appointed as the ballet director and choreographer of the Vienna Staatsoper Ballet, a position he held for ten years. In 2001 he was also appointed the artistic director of the Vienna Staatsoper Ballet School. He has choreographed several ballets for the Stuttgart Ballet including Empty Place, Black Angels and Mata Hari. For the Ballets de Monte-Carlo he staged Watching Waters. At the Vienna State Opera he staged Voyage, a solo for Vladimir Malakhov, Konzertantes Duo, Mon Euridice for Malakhov, Elements, Wiener Blut, Wolfgang Amadé, Die sieben letzten Worte, Bolero, Cinderella (music by Johann Strauss), The Nutcracker, Spartacus and many others. He also choreographed many operas at the Vienna Staatsoper as well as in Berlin, Lisbon, Milan, Bilbao and St. Petersburg, Bregenz and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
