Johan Engels was born in South Africa. He has designed numerous opera, ballet and musicals productions including Die Fledermaus (J. Strauss), Maskerade (Nielsen), Osud (Janacek), Turandot (Puccini), L’amore dei tre re (Montemezzi), Agrippina (Handel), Les Troyens (Berlioz), Thais (Massenet), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Britten), Romeo et Juliette (Gounod), Otello, Don Carlo, Macbeth (Verdi) as well as Anything Goes and Showboat. He has worked at the Salzburg Festival, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Vienna Staatsoper and in the opera houses of Bregenz, Houston, Opera North, Prague, Zurich, Welsh National Opera, Berlin, Lyon, Chicago, Parma, Monte Carlo, Los Angeles, Toronto and many others.
