Mori Hanae, costume designer
Hanae Mori was born in Japan. After studying Japanese literature in Tokyo she opened her first studio in Tokyo in 1951 and started designing costumes for numerous Japanese films. In 1965 she held her first fashion show in New York and in 1975 she presented her collection in Monaco and Paris and two years later she opened her Haute Couture Maison in Paris. Her opera credits include Madama Butterfly (Puccini) for La Scala in Milan, Elektra (R. Strauss) for the Salzburg Festival, Arabella (R. Strauss) for the New National Theatre in Tokyo and for the Paris Opera Ballet’s production of Cinderella (Prokofiev). She has also designed costumes for several Japanese theatre productions. In 2012 she designed porcelain tableware with the French Limoges brand Haviland. She is an Officer de la Legion d’Honneur in France and a recipient of the Order of Culture in Japan.
