Brown Paul, set designer
Paul Brown, set designer, was born in England. He is a recipient of an honorary diploma at the Prague Quadrennial international theatre design exhibition in 1999. He has received the prestigious Evening Standard theatre prize from London critics and journalists several times: in 1995 for designing King Arthur (Purcell) at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; in 2001 for the sets for The Tempest and Plato at the Almeida Theatre; and in 2004 for The False Servant, a staging of Marivaux´ Les fausses confidences at the National Theatre. Productions he has designed include Die Zauberflote (Mozart) at the Salzburg Festival, Mitridate, re di Ponte (Mozart), Falstaff, I masnadieri (Verdi) at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, King Arthur (Purcell), Moses und Aaron (Schonberg), Il trovatore (Verdi) at the Metropolitan Opera, Pelleas et Melisande (Debussy), Lulu (berg) and The Turn of the Screw (Britten) at Glyndebourne Festival, Peter Grimes (Britten) and Parsifal (Wagner) at Paris and many more. He has worked on the films Angels and Insects (1996), for which he received an Oscar nomination as best costume designer, and Philip Haas´ Up at the Villa (2000). Together with Jonathan Kent he has staged several musicals on Broadway, among them Man of La Mancha. At the Israeli Opera he designed Don Giovanni (Mozart).
