Mitchell Michael, set & costume designer
Michael Mitchell, set and costume designer, was born in South Africa. He has designed productions for UCT Opera School, Jazzart Dance Theatre and Cape Town City Ballet as well as the Foundation d’Entrepise SPHERE in La Turbie, Nice. He most recently designed Porgy and Bess (Gershwin) for Cape Town Opera’s season in Edinburgh, London and Wales and L’elisir d‘amore (Donizetti), the set of Don Giovanni (Mozart) and the set and costumes of Manon (Massenet) for Cape Town Opera and UCT Opera School in Cape Town. His other designs include African Songbook: A musical Tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela, Madama Butterfly (Puccini), Werther (Massenet), Rigoletto (Verdi), La rondine (Puccini), Le nozze di Figaro, Cosi fan tutte (Mozart), La boheme, Gianni Schicchi (Puccini), Carmen (Bizet), Nabucco (Verdi), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Britten), Fidelio (Beethoven) and others. He won FNB Vita awards for Into the Woods (Sondheim), Othello (Shakespeare) and Honk, the musical, as well as a Fleur du Cap Award for the set design of Beethoven, In Raptus. He holds a Diploma in Fine Arts and Design and is Cape Town Opera’s Resident Designer. This is his first work at the Israeli Opera.
