Hugh Smith was born in the USA. He has performed, among others, Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Rodolfo in La bohème (Puccini), Alfredo in La traviata, The Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, Manrico in Il trovatore (Verdi), the title role in Faust (Gounod), Lenski in Yevgeny Oniegin (Tchaikovsky), Don José in Carmen (Bizet) and others. He has performed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bayrische Staatsoper München, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, Opera Châtelet in Paris and others.
