The Seven Glass Doors of Chihuly

Duke Bluebeard's Castle by Bartok

Dale Chihuly is one of the renowned international glass artists of our time. Now opera lovers in Israel will be able to revel in the beauty of his art in a special production of
Bela Bartok's psychological one act opera, Duke Bluebeard's Castle.
Chihuly has created magnificent glass doors that comprise the set of this production.
Each door reveals the treasures of the protagonist of this opera which he shows his new wife Judith:
The Torture Chamber
The Armory
The Treasury
The Garden
The Kingdom
The Lake of Tears
But the mystery behind the seventh door will not be revealed at this point.

Young Israeli conductor Ilan Volkov, who was the music director of the BBC Scottish Orchestra, will conduct the opera orchestra, the Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion. The soloists will be Vladimir Braun (Bluebeard) and Svetlana Sandler (Judith) in the Bartok opera and mezzo soprano Edna Prochnik in Mahler's song cycle, Kindertotenlieder, which will be performed at the first part of the evening. Shirit Lee Weiss directs the Bartok opera which also features Alex Ansky as narrator.

In this very special performance of Duke Bluebeard's Castle the orchestra sits on stage and the seven glass doors designed by Chihuly are situated in front of the orchestra. When Bluebeard and Judith open the castle doors, each door is turned and reveals a magnificent glass design by Chihuly.
