Emilio Sagi, director, was born in Spain and studies philosophy at the University of Oviedo and musicology at the University of London. He made his debut as a director in 1982 with Don Pasquale (Donizetti). Between 2001 and 2005 he was the artistic director of the Royal Theatre of Madrid. Today he is artistic director of the Theatre Arriaga of Bilbao. He has directed numerous operas, operettas from the Baroque to the contemporary in leading opera houses around the world including La Scala in Milan,  Bologna, Venice, Genova, Lisbon, Theatre de l'Odeón and Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, Rome, Dusseldorf, Los Angeles, Washington, San Francisco, Houston, Teatro Colón and Teatro Avenida in Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Vienna Volksoper, Teater an der Wien, Geneva, Monte-Carlo, Nice, Toulouse, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Teatro Bunka Kaikan and New National Theatre in Tokyo, Arts Festival of Osaka, Hong-Kong Opera Festival, Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, Valencia, Teatro Amazonas of Manaus, Barcelona and Madrid. At the Israeli Opera he directed Carmen (Bizet).
